'Y2K' Digital Release Date

A24's nostalgic comedy horror Y2K has made its streaming debut on Max as of April 4th, 2025. The film is now available to stream as part of a Max subscription, with its HBO linear premiere following on April 5th, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. ET. For those who prefer ownership, the movie has been available on digital platforms for purchase and rental since December 24th, 2024, following its theatrical run that began on December 6th, 2024.

Y2K comes from director Kyle Mooney, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, who co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Winter. The film successfully blends elements of teen comedy, horror, and sci-fi, with a nostalgic focus on Y2K anxieties and artificial intelligence themes that feel surprisingly relevant to today's tech concerns.

The story centers on two high-school outcasts played by Jaeden Martell and Rachel Zegler, who make the fateful decision to crash a New Year's Eve 1999 party. The impressive ensemble cast is rounded out by Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi (making his acting debut), 90s icon Alicia Silverstone in a clever casting nod, and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit fame.

Set during the final hours of 1999, the film captures the unique anxiety of the Y2K moment – when the world collectively worried that computer systems would collapse as the clock struck midnight on the new millennium. What begins as an awkward attempt by the protagonists to elevate their social status quickly spirals into chaos when the clock strikes twelve. The night transforms into something far more dangerous and surreal than anyone could have anticipated, as Y2K fears materialize in unexpected and increasingly bizarre ways.

The film premiered at SXSW (South by Southwest) on March 9, 2024, and has generated divided opinions among critics and audiences. While its 4.8/10 IMDb rating and 49 Metascore suggest mixed reception, the film has found appreciation among viewers nostalgic for late 90s culture. The production design deserves particular praise for its meticulous recreation of the era's fashion, technology, and cultural touchstones – from dial-up internet sounds to the perfect soundtrack of millennium-era hits.
