‘The Monkey’ Digital Release Date: When to Stream the Stephen King Horror Adaptation

Universal Pictures has released their horror comedy THE MONKEY on digital platforms, which arrived on April 4th, 2025. The film is now available on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) services for rental and purchase, with a physical release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD scheduled for June 24th, 2025.

The Monkey brings Stephen King's 1980 short story to life under the direction of Osgood Perkins, who also adapted the screenplay. The film skillfully blends horror elements with dark comedy and splatter sequences, creating a unique viewing experience that honors King's distinctive storytelling style.

Theo James leads the cast with a compelling performance, alongside Tatiana Maslany. The supporting ensemble includes Christian Convery, Colin O'Brien, Adam Scott (in a scene-stealing role), Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, and Elijah Wood, each contributing to the film's unsettling atmosphere.

The narrative follows twin brothers Bill and Hal who discover their father's old monkey toy hidden in the attic. After throwing the toy away and growing apart over the years, the brothers are forced to reunite when, twenty-five years later, the monkey resurfaces and begins a new killing spree. Now estranged, the brothers must confront both their complicated relationship and the cursed toy that tore their family apart.

The film's standout feature is undoubtedly the monkey toy itself, designed with meticulous attention to detail. Critics have noted its effectively creepy appearance, particularly the disturbing grimace that appears when it activates what some reviewers have dubbed its "murder magic." Several death sequences have drawn comparisons to the "Final Destination" franchise for their creative and unexpected nature.

While reviews have been mixed (the film currently holds a 6.0/10 rating on IMDb and a 62 Metascore), fans of Stephen King adaptations and horror comedies will find The Monkey delivers on its premise with style and dark humor.
